Peripheral Arterial Tone (PAT) is a unique physiological signal that mirrors changes in the autonomic nervous system (ANS) caused by respiratory disturbances during sleep. The ANS regulates many of our essential functions, and it does this without our conscious control, regulating blood vessel size, blood pressure, airflow in the lungs, and the heart’s electrical activity and ability to contract. Night Owl measures the changes in the PAT signal (see the image below).
Night Owl measures the changes in the PAT signal, oxygen levels, and actigraphy, and derives the patient’s apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). AHI is the scale used to measure the severity of OSA and is calculated by dividing the total number of episodes of shallow or halted breathing by the total number of hours a person is asleep.
